Copenhagen has a lot of great museums; some are obvious and well-known, while others are a bit hidden and off the beaten track. Below is a list of the museums in the Copenhagen and surrounding areas. Located right behind Tivoli, the Glyptotek houses over 10.000 works of art divided into two principal collections. One is of works from the Mediterranean Cradle of Western culture; the other is of Danish and French art from the 19th and 20th centuries. Free entry on Sundays.
Frederiksholms Kanal 12, 1220 København K Tlf: 33 13 44 11
Located across from Christiansborg, The National deals with Danish Cultural History. You can spend a whole day exploring this museum. I suggest taking one of the self-guided tours, which you can get at the information desk. The tour will take you an hour to complete, but it will give you a great overview and then you can return and explore the areas that interest you most. There is also a wonderful café where you can enjoy a nice meal for a reasonable price. Free entry.
Gl. Strandvej 13, 3050 Humlebæk Tlf: 49 19 07 19
The Louisiana is regarded as one of the best modern art museums in northern Europe and is very popular. Unfortunately, it is not in Copenhagen. It is located 40 minutes north of the city in Humblebaek. It has a permanent exhibition plus several rotating exhibits, including an outdoor sculpture park.

The museum is located on the southeast corner of Ostre Anlaeg. This is a wonderful museum with several collections, including the large cast collection and a children’s art section. Most of the museum is free, but there are some collections which charge a small fee. Collections change, so check their website for the latest news.

Bymuseet has a collection of prints, engravings and other artwork all about the city of Copenhagen. Some really fascinating pictures and artwork -- well worth a visit. Small entrance fee. Free entry on Fridays.
Stockholmsgade 20, 2100 Copenhagen Tlf: 35 42 03 36
The Hirschsprung houses a large collection of paintings, most notably from the Skagen area of Denmark. Free entry on Wednesdays.
Rådhuspladsen 57, 1550 Copenhagen Tlf: 33 32 31 31
Ripley's is located right across from the Rådhuspladsen (next to McDonald's) and is a collection of weird and wacky things. Lots of hands-on things to feel and try.

The museum has rotating exhibits, but mostly it is art by up-and-coming or prominent Scandinavian artists. Conveniently located right off the Strøget.
Bredgade 68, 1260 København Tlf: 33 18 56 56
Located just south of the Kastellet. This is a museum for those interested in the history of Danish design. Parts of the museum charge a fee; other areas are free.
Nikolaj Plads 10, 1067 København K Tlf:33 18 17 80
Located right off the Strøget on Nikolaj Plads. If you like odd, contemporary art, then this might be the place for you. Collections and exhibitions change regularly.
Overgaden oven Vandet, 1415 Copenhagen Tlf:33 11 60 37
Located on Overgaden oven Vandet 58 in Christiansnhavn. The museum has one of the world's finest collections of naval models, including paintings and other naval memorabilia. Free admission on Wednesdays.
Stavnsholtvej, 3520 Farum Tlf:72 35 61 00
This is a collection of 4 historical buildings that are dedicated to the history of immigration in Denmark, including a large database of immigrants.
Located at Tøjhusgade 3, this museum houses a collection of hand-held weapons and cannons. If you like weapons, you will enjoy a visit here. Free admission on Wednesdays.
Frederiksholms Kanal 29, 1220 Copenhagen Tlf: 33 11 60 37
The museum is in the harbor located at the end of Holmen. If you enjoy naval crafts, then here is your chance to board 3 different vessels from the Danish Navy. You can inspect a submarine, a fast boat and a frigate.
Bertel Thorvaldsens Plads 2, 1213 Copenhagen Tlf: 33 32 15 32
The museum houses most of the works of art created by Denmark’s most famous artist, Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844). Entry is free on Wednesdays.
Hovedgaden 4 & 12, 2791 Dragør Tlf: 32 53 02 50
This is 3 museums all located in the Dragor area. They house a collection of paintings and artwork depicting the cultural history of the area. Includes the Dragør Museum, Molsteds Museum and Amagermuseet.
Skovvej 100, 2635 Ishøj Tlf: 43 54 02 22
The Arken is located outside of Copenhagen in Ishøj. The museum is built like a ship and houses Scandinavian works of art – mostly modern.
HC Andersens Boulevard 27, 1553 Copenhagen Tlf: 33 69 33 69
Located next to Tivoli, this museum has rotating exhibits dealing with contemporary art.
Tuborg Havnevej 7, 2900 Hellerup Tlf: 39 27 33 33
The Experimentarium is probably one of the most fun museums in Copenhagen, especially if you have children. There are over 300 exhibits covering all branches of science and they are hands-on. You can touch the exhibits, try them, play around and have fun. This is a great place to take your children and is very popular with schools.
Churchillparken, 1263 Copenhagen Tlf: 33 47 39 21
This museum is dedicated to the history of the Danish resistance movement during 1940 – 1945, when the Germans occupied Denmark. Free entrance.
Frederiksberg Rundel, 2000 Frederiksberg Tlf: 38 86 05 23
Located west of the city center in Frederiksberg, near the entrance to Frederiksberg Have. Well worth a visit if you enjoy a bit of comedy. Lots of sketches and drawings from the famous Danish artist, Storm P.
Købmagergade 37, 1012 Copenhagen Tlf: 33 41 09 00
This is a museum dedicated to the history of communication in Denmark. Interesting photos and old instruments. Admission is free on Wednesdays.
Pile Alle 55, 2000 Frederiksberg Tlf: 33 21 93 10
This museum is located in a modern glass building and is dedicated to glass work. Very interesting place.
Folkemuseet (Musem Nordsjælland)
Frederiksgade 11, 3400 Hillerød Tlf: 48 24 34 48
Located in Hillerød, this is a cultural history museum for the north Sjaelland area.
Gamle Carlsberg Vej 11, 2500 Valby 33 27 12 82
Located in Valby, this is a museum dedicated to the history of the Carlsberg Brewery. Tour the museum and learn about the brewery. At the end there is a chance to sample the various wares for free. Must be 18 or older to sample the beer.

This museum consists of 4 museums all dedicated to the past 150 years of workers and their daily lives. See how they lived and worked.
Rahbeks Allé 23, 1801 Frederiksberg Tlf: 33 31 43 62
A museum set in an apartment belonging to the Rahbeks. It is a step back into the 1800s.
Pederstrupvej 51, 2750 Ballerup Tlf. 44 97 11 13
This museum, located in Pederstrup, is a village museum dedicated to the history of Ballerup and includes a house displaying watercolors done by the Grand Duchess Olga.
Avedørelejren, 2650 Hvidovre Tlf: 36 49 00 30.
Located in the old military barracks in Avedøre, the museum is dedicated to the circus arts. Presently closed til 2009 due to a new exhibition in the works.
Nyhavn 2, 1051 Copenhagen Tlf: 33 13 40 22
This is a new museum featuring modern art. Rotating exhibits.

The museum features Danish architecture.

Museum about the history of hunting and forest use in Denmark. Free entrance on Wednesdays.
Danish School Museum (Dansk Skolemuseet)
Rådhusstræde 6, 1466 Copenhagen
The museum was about the history of the school system in Denmark. Unfortunately due to funding the museum has closed. May reopen?
Kronprinsessegade 30, 1306 Copenhagen Tlf: 33 73 49 49
The museum has two exhibits – one on Islamic Artwork and the other is a collection of fine art from the 18th century. Free entrance.
Søren Kierkegaards Plads 1, 1016 Copenhagen Tlf: 33 47 47 47
Lots of historical documents and magazines.
Elværksvej 50, 2450 Copenhgen Tlf: 32 54 02 27
This museum houses a huge diesel motor from 1932. This is the world's largest diesel motor and it still works. It is started up a couple of times a week. Check website for a schedule. Also houses a history of the diesel motor and other technological history.
Klostergade 11, Esrum, 3230 Græsted Tlf: 48 36 04 00
Located in northern Sjaelland in Graested, this is dedicated to the middle ages and is also a retreat -- a place to really get away. The time to visit is during their summer events. Download their schedule to really get the most of your visit.
Vilvordevej 110, 2920 Charlottenlund Tlf: 39 64 11 83
Located in Charlottelund, this is a museum dedicated to the furniture of Finn Juhl. Visit his home, which is tauted as being in full harmony. Part of the Ordrupgaard Museum.
Agnetevej 9, 3060 Espergaerde Tlf. 49 28 19 00
The museum is located south of Helsingør in Espergaerde. Dedicated to the history of the fishing industry in Øresund.
Øster Voldgade 5-7, 1350 Copenhagen Tlf: 35 32 23 45
Dedicated to the geological evolution of Denmark and Greenland.

The National Danish religion is Evangelical Lutheran and most Danes are part of the state supported church system.

Before arriving, it is important to have your documents for Denmark; such as passport, visa, work and study permits in order.
